Cooperstown 77, Sherburne-Earlville 46

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville may not play a Class B team in the Section III tournament that is as good as Class C Cooperstown.

The state-ranked Redskins are that good.

Sherburne-Earlville gained some confidence in the first minute of the third quarter closing Cooperstown’s lead to 33-30 after Austin Jasper’s layup. Over the last seven minutes of the quarter, the momentum of the game went decidedly Cooperstown’s way.

Mike Moakler had 10 points in a 24-4 run to end the quarter, and the Marauders committed six of their 27 turnovers as the contest quickly slipped away. Cooperstown built its lead to as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter, and was nearly perfect in every aspect of the game finishing with 15 straight made free throws.

“They’re like that. They can get hot, and they’re all good shooters,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard of Cooperstown. “We need to play almost a perfect game to beat them. But we turned it over too much, and that led to some easy buckets for them.”
