Oxford, Greene Volleyball Teams Advance To Sectional Semifinals

Oxford 3, Southern Cayuga 0

OXFORD – Oxford advanced to the Section IV Class D semifinals defeating Southern Cayuga in three games Tuesday, 25-12, 25-22, 25-20.

Kera Shepler had six aces and four assists for Oxford (9-5), who return to action Nov. 3 at Horseheads.

Olivia Roach and Shepler shared the team lead with five kills, and Cathryn Mercurio picked up a team-high six digs.

Oxford joins three other teams for Thursday’s semifinals at Horseheads Middle School.

Greene 3, Susquehanna Valley 2

GREENE – Greene rallied from two games down to prevail over Susquehanna Valley in Wednesday’s Class C quarterfinal matchuup.

Marissa Pierce had 20 kills and Rebecca Hanrahan 16 put-aways in an 18-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-14 victory. “We didn’t have the momentum in the firs two games, but adjustments were made, and played better as a team,” said Greene coach Shelbe Furman. “We had a lot of energy coming from the sidelines and fans, and that gave us a big spark.”

Pierce, Jessica Willard, and Rebecca Willard were mainstays behind the service line with just three missed serves combined over the five-game match. Jessica Willard led with 16 assists and Jill McDaniels had 15 helpers. Hanrahan, who added seven aces, moved over 300 career kills in the victory.
