The Great Unwashed

‘Tis the hunting season for The Great Unwashed. Those who caustic writer H.L. Mencken called the “booboisee.” In other words, those of the middle and working classes who don’t think the way the smarter folks do.

The President has taken a few swipes at them. John Kerry has made a habit of deriding them. Writer Nadine Parker calls Sarah Palin “Queen of the Booboisee.” Various critics label Tea Party followers as, well, dumb.

Lately New York City Mayor Bloomberg has chimed in. He thinks some of the newly elected members of Congress “… they can’t read. I bet you a bunch of these people don’t have passports … nobody knows where China is.”  (The Mayor has decided through edict what his subjects may and may not eat. With him, it is “DON’T let them eat cake!” His latest target is canned soup. Too much salt.)

Michael Moore and entertainer Bill Maher have built careers on the premise and promise that flyover country has more boobs than ears of corn. And we are not talking about chests here.

Will Rogers said common sense ain’t so common. Peering down their snouts, the elite sigh that common people are all too common. And have no common sense to boot.

Some of this came to mind when I saw a Forbes article on the results of a poll taken just before the election. The pollees were evenly divided between political parties, with some undecideds tossed in. I’m sure there were lots of booboisee or Great Unwashed among those polled.

About 70 percent of these boobs said Washington should balance the budget. Through meaningful cuts in spending. Take that John Kerry. With your votes you have helped flood the nation with red ink. You, of the anointed. You of brilliance. You who love to remind the boobs how little they know. Well, they know something that is worth knowing. If you keep spending more than you earn you will swamp your yacht.

About the same percent of these Unwashed want to end earmarks and other wasteful spending. About 61 percent said no to looming tax increases. About 60 percent feel government ought to follow the Constitution.

What? Follow the Constitution? How absurd. How loathsome. How stupid. Why, half our judges will tell you the Constitution is merely a reference point. To see it as a set of rules and principles is, well, it’s a crazy idea of the booboisee.

Think about it. The reason the United States exists is because the booboisee colonists were revolted by the way the elites ruled them. So much so, they revolted.

The ruling elite could not imagine how common colonists could defeat such a world power as Britain. Could not imagine how they could run a country. Over the years the elites here could not imagine that blacks could handle equality. Or women, for that matter. The elite were a little short in the imagination department. They usually are.

They came to mind when I read that Mayor Bloomberg believed the Tea Party to be “a fad” and “irrational.” As if  the Washington birds that got us into this mess are rational?
