American Legion Riders, Fire and Iron team up for YMCA scholarship ride

NORWICH – This weekend, the American Legion Riders from the Lt. Warren Eaton American Legion Post 189 in Norwich and the Norwich Fire Department’s Fire and Iron Motorcycle Club are teaming up to raise money for the Norwich Farmily YMCA’s Open Doors Scholarship Fund.

Together, the two local motorcycle groups will host a fundraising ride Sunday, which will kick off the Y’s Annual Support Campaign.

“The Y supports a lot of families in different ways,” said organizer Jerry Reyes, who is a member of both the American Legion Riders and the Y.

According to Reyes, he and his fellow motorcycle riders support the Y’s mission of building strong minds, strong spirits and strong bodies. That’s why they decided to start the ride last year as their main community fundraiser.

In its inaugural year, the ride drew approximately 77 participants and 55 bikes, and succeeded in raising close to $850. He and the other organizers have set their sights even higher for the second annual event.

“We’re at least hoping to double it this year,” said the YMCA’s Julie Wallen, whose husband Jim Wallen is active with Fire and Iron.

According to YMCA Executive Director Jamey Mullen, every bit helps.

“It’s great to see people passionate ... and using that in a way to support the community,” he said.
