Otselic Valley 2, DeRuyter 1

SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley coach Kevin Springer asked the question: “When was the last time Otselic Valley’s girls’ soccer team started the season 1 and 0?”

The Vikings jumped out to a two-goal lead, and after DeRuyter picked up momentum with a late first-half goal, blanked the Rockets the rest of the way.

“DeRuyter is a really good team, and I think they’ll be one of the top teams in our league this year,” Springer said. “I don’t know. We were fired up and ready to play tonight.”

Springer also earned some bragging rights as his brother Tom coaches the Rockets. Tom has won every game against his brother since Kevin started coaching OV in 2007, a streak of eight or nine wins that just ended.

“I’ve never beaten him,” the OV coach said. “The girls were just ecstatic after the win, and so was I. In the back of my mind, I was hoping we could keep it close and make a game of it. As the game went on, I started to think that maybe we could hang on and get the win. I think the girls sensed it, and we really picked it up the last five or six minutes.”
