BAINBRIDGE – A shooting incident involving a Bainbridge couple has been ruled accidental by investigators.

On Aug. 4, New York State Police in Sidney were dispatched by Delaware County 911 to a reported accidental shooting at 107 Crest Drive in the Town of Bainbridge, Chenango County. Investigation at the scene revealed Roger K. Barnhart, 46, accidentally discharged a round from his lawfully owned Glock .40 caliber pistol while unloading the weapon.

The discharged round traveled through Barnhart’s hand and then struck his wife, Marlene R. Barnhart, 37, who was also in the room. Marlene Barnhart sustained a superficial wound to her thigh as a result. Both subjects were treated at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City for non-life threatening injuries and released.

Barnhart, a former Marine Corps Reservist, is the South New Berlin postmaster.

Police said their investigation is continuing.
