NORWICH – Residents who reside in the West Hill region of the city and town of Norwich are advised not to leave exposed garbage that may attract bears.

Town of Norwich Supervisor David C. Law said a bear had been spotted near Randall Avenue, Mt. Hope Cemetery and over the hill toward Upper and Lower Ravine roads. City Codes Enforcement Officer Jason Lawrence said he had received reports of garbage cans that were found flipped.

“They’ve been passing through along that whole ridge,” Law said, adding that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation had been contacted.

“People need to be diligent about securing their garbage,” said Lawrence.

Here's some tips to avoid attracting bruins to your residence:

• Bird feed is a very strong attraction for bears, even if they can't reach it. Do not place food outside to attract raccoons, squirrels or other wildlife.
