ONEONTA – Norwich’s advantage in the field events was not enough to overcome the Yellowjackets’ dominance on the track as host Oneonta beat the Tornado boys, 84-67.

Norwich trailed by nearly 40 points on the track fueled by Oneonta’s top-three sweeps in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races. “Those two events gave them 18 points, the rest of the meet we’re even with them if not ahead,” said Norwich coach Paul Sims.

Norwich’s 1,600-meter relay team of Kyle Acenowr, Nate Ashton, Cameron Turner, and Matt Murray turned in a season-best winning time of 3:41.9, and Sims says this group could approach the school record by year-end.

For the girls, Sarah Bonnell won four total events – one on a relay – and Cleo Daoud had two individual first-place finishes in an 85-55 loss to the ‘Jackets. Again, the individual distance races were Norwich’s downfall as Oneonta claimed the top three spots in each event to widen the bulge.

Also grabbing wins for the Tornado girls were Katie Benenati (100-meter hurdles), Shannon Curley (discus), and Elisha Eddy (shot put).

Norwich hosts Seton Catholic Central on Thursday.
