Pennysaver/Manpower win first-ever CBL title

NORWICH – Norwich Pennysaver/Manpower Inc., just a .500 team during the regular season, came from the fifth-seeded spot to win the Norwich YMCA Men’s Corporate Basketball League title on Wednesday night.

Locked in a tight game at halftime, Pennysaver/Manpower went on a 19-6 run midway through the second half to build its lead to 15 points, and carried that salvo to a 65-56 victory over Haddad Construction.

Mike Genute scored 20 points for the victorious team including 8-for-9 from the foul line in the second half. Brandon Foulds, who is one of two original team members left from the club’s first squad five years ago, added 14 markers to the win.

“We’ve been fighting year after year, and we added a couple pieces to the team, and it paid off,” Foulds said. “We played better and better together, and became a really good team by the end of the year.”

In the first two meetings this season, Pennysaver/Manpower eked out a one-point win in December, but it was Haddad who rolled to a 29-point victory just over five weeks ago.

Haddad jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first 90 seconds, a start reminiscent of the blowout win in February. Foulds and Genute had eight points apiece in the first half to combat the 12-point first half of Haddad’s Will Joslyn.
