OXFORD – With its creative costuming, fantastic set, witty dialogue and numerous musical numbers, this weekend’s Oxford High School Drama Club’s production of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, “Once Upon a Mattress,” is a feast for both the eyes and the ears.
Audiences will have two chances to see the show: at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday in the Oxford Academy Performing Arts Auditorium. Tickets are $4 for students and senior citizens; $5 for adults.
Set in a fairy tale kingdom, the play reveals the “true” events which served as the basis for Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea.”
As the audience quickly learns, through the narration provided by the Minstrel (Noah Auwarter), the actual events transpired much differently than related in the beloved children’s tale. It is not the story of a prince searching for a royal bride, but rather that of a domineering mother, Queen Aggravain (Catherine Sasso) searching the land for a princess worthy of wedding her son, Prince Dauntless (Andrew Campbell), the ultimate mama’s boy.
The Queen has decreed that no one else in the kingdom shall marry until Dauntless finds a suitable bride, but so far twelve princesses have failed to pass the elaborate tests the she and her wizard (Ashley Nichols) have concocted. The court fears that all is lost, until Sir Harry (Jacob Carr) takes matters into his own hands to find a bride for the prince after learning that his own lady love, Lady Larken (Amber Kida) is expecting. His quest leads him to Princess Winnifred (Jessica Tefft), who in her haste to meet the royal bachelor, swims the castle moat.
