S-E 50, Ilion 48

ILION – Sherburne-Earlville beat Ilion in its second close game with the Golden Bombers this season on Thursday.

The Marauders (9-2), down 46-42 with about two minutes to play, scored eight straight points to put away the host team. Nicole Carpenter started the surge with a free throw, Caitlynn Adams scored to close the gap to one, and Kristi Irwin’s third three of the game put S-E ahead for good. Bridget Irwin’s basket made it a four-point margin with under a minute left.

Kristi Irwin finished with 13 points to go with three steals and six rebounds. Bridget Irwin scored 13 points, and Kristi Vibbard had 12.

Ilion’s Sarah Alexander and Sarah Edwards, who combined for 44 points in the two schools’ first meeting this year, totaled just 19 on Thursday. “We talked before the game about containing them, and they hurt us on the offensive glass the first time,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “We did a much better job keeping them off the boards and denying them the basketball.”
