Norwich wins three matches at Owego Duals

OWEGO – Norwich started the Owego Duals with its best victory of the season. Over the two-day, eight-dual-meet tournament, the Tornado also picked up wins over Watkins Glen and Southern Springs to place sixth out of nine teams.

“To beat Owego (50-36), who was coming off a win in the Elmira Tournament, was big for us,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “The kids were great. They were all pumped up and ready to go. They all wrestled hard and with intensity.”

Norwich seventh-graders Tristan Rifanburg (96) and Frank Garcia (103) finished with perfect 8-0 records on the day. Keegan Levesque (189) and Tanner Cummings (112) won six of eight matches, and Cameron Turner (145) posted a winning mark taking five of eight. First-year wrestler, Anthony Vittello, who only started wrestling two months ago, had three victories against some seasoned competition.

“Overall, the team did really well,” Downey said. “It was tough to stay up after beating Owego. It seemed like the kids really came together as a team this weekend.”

Norwich defeated Southern Springs, 48-30, and Watkins Glen, 50-19.
