S-E wins team title at Herkimer

Wrestling

HERKIMER – Sherburne-Earlville placed five wrestlers in the finals, and four came away with championship wins leading the Marauders to the team title at the Herkimer Tournament this past Saturday.

Tyi Franklin (103), Greg DuVall (135), Dan Cleveland (145), and Derek Nelson (285) all claimed titles. Spencer Franklin (112) added a runner-up finish.

The Marauders had an inauspicious start to the day losing their first seven contested matches. By the consolation finals and finals, S-E had battled back to take a one-point lead over Mohawk. With its four titles, the final margin was 11 points.

“It was just a great team effort,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks. “It wasn’t just the five guys that got to the finals. Everybody else won matches. Every time you win a match, you gain points. When you pin your kid, it’s extra points. We had a lot of guys winning matches that didn’t place, but all of those points added up. It was a great turnaround after the way we started the day.”

Top team scores: Sherburne-Earlville, 146; Mohawk, 135; Canastota 120.

Greene 60, Norwich 12

GREENE – Saturday morning, Norwich got off to a good start before Greene raced to a powerful finish dotted with numerous pins.

Frank Garcia (103) opened the local matchup with his first varsity victory, a pin over the Trojans’ Tyler Dickman. Tanner Cummings (112) followed with a forfeit win, Norwich’s last victory of the day.

Jake Shearer (119) started a run of 10 wins for Greene, most of which ended in pinfalls. Kyle Stanton (215) wrapped up the Trojans’ dual win with a pin in less than 30 seconds.

“The score doesn’t show it, but Norwich is an improved team,” said Greene coach Tim Jenks. “We’re pretty experienced from 130 pounds on up.”
