Oxford defense clamps down

Oxford 43, Walton 38

WALTON – Oxford held Walton scoreless in the third period to stretch its lead to 11 points, and senior Alyshia Crawford made 7-of-10 foul shots in the fourth quarter – four in the last minute, to seal Tuesday’s opening win.

Walton kept pace in the first half behind three treys and 11 points from Holly Reynolds. Reynolds was blanked in the second half as Julie Heggie and Kelli Whitehill teamed up to slow down Reynolds.

Jackie Heggie scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Oxford, while Haley Witchella added 13 points, and Crawford nine.

“It really was hard-nosed defense that did it for us in the third quarter,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “Walton is probably a top-three team in its division. This is a big win for us.”
