County fulfills obligation to museum project

NORWICH – Chenango County has fulfilled its four-year, $100,000 promise of financial support of the building and renovation project underway at the Chenango County Historical Society and Museum on Rexford Street.

Board of Supervisors Chairman Richard B. Decker last week presented the Society’s final request to members of the Planning & Economic Development Committee for payment.

The full board had already released $50,000 since 2007. The funding was appropriated from the county’s portion of Tobacco Settlement Funds.

Earlier this month, members of the Finance Committee suggested scaling back the amount commited in order to reflect changes in the Society’s plans and referred the matter to Planning. The formerly $3 million project was scaled back to $320,000 to reflect the downturn in the economy and increased building costs, its director reported back in June.
