Abbott wins 300th career game at Norwich

CONKLIN – Thirteen games into his 23rd season as head coach of Norwich, Mark Abbott picked up his 300th career win.

Entering the season with 289 victories, the Tornado rolled to win number 11 Thursday night putting up 69 points through three periods of play. Following the game, school officials at Susquehanna Valley High School recognized Abbott’s achievement. “It was real touching,” Abbott said. “I’ve had a lot of fun the past 23 years. I’ve had the opportunity to coach a lot of great guys.”

Norwich scored in transition, scored off its press, scored in its halfcourt offense, and all the while maintained its intensity, that despite the imminent blowout.

Josh Borfitz had nine points in Norwich’s 26-point second quarter, and Corey Dietrich eight markers among the 27-point third stanza. “Tonight we had a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and the guys know what’s ahead of them,” Abbott said. “We have a big stretch of games coming up, and we lead our division by one game. The best team will win the division, and we want to be the best team.”



Dietrich’s 15 points led Norwich, Borfitz and Cory Law netted nine each, and Tim Clark scored eight for a balanced NHS unit.

Norwich is off until Jan. 24’s game at Oneonta.

Afton 56, B-G 38

BAINBRIDGE – Afton dominated the offensive glass and turned up the pressure in the third quarter to outscore the Bobcats 20-9 and take command of Thursday’s contest.

Adam Davis had six in the third stanza and Adam Rupakus five. Mike Muller led the Crimson Knights in scoring with 21 points.

“We took care of the ball pretty well in the first half, then they started pressuring us,” said B-G coach Ben Nelson.

Shane Cornish led B-G with 14 points.
