Punching the Clock: Work is hard play

It’s not often that I come across a job that’s more fun than mine, but after spending an evening working at Nowich’s new kid-based fun center, Kids Kingdom, I think I’ve found just that.

Kids Kingdom officially opened its doors last Friday, and with word spreading about all of the fun activities available at their Lee Avenue location, owners Lesley Ann and Jason Lawrence say it has been busier than anticipated this early in the game.

“It’s been really exciting. People have come in and we’re getting good feedback,” Lesley said. More than 17 kids passed through the doors the first day, and the second day, the location was the site of a birthday party.

I arrived at Kids Kingdom at around 6:30 on Wednesday night, and already, several kids were enjoying the large play area. I spent a few minutes chatting with the owners and drinking a cup of coffee in the parent lounge area. I could have spent a lot longer there. With wireless Internet, comfortable seating and a massage chair, all with a clear view of the play area, it would be easy to spend some time there, but instead I got to work.

I’m using the term “work” loosely here. For the majority of the evening, I was playing along side the little kids who were running around the 5,000 square foot play area.
