YMCA employee honored at award ceremony

NORWICH – The New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities celebrated a “Works for Me” recognition ceremony on Tuesday, and among those honored was Sherburne resident Ryan Scott.

An 18-year employee of the Norwich Family YMCA, Ryan was nominated for the statewide award by his job coach LuAnn Costley Shepard. Ryan started his employment at the Norwich Family YMCA on June 24, 1991 when former Facility Director Jerry Phelan, who was his immediate supervisor, hired him. He completed a two-year, volunteer work program at the YMCA through BOCES.

Phelan stated: “Ryan is an amazing worker who follows instructions well. Ryan’s personality is contagious, and (he) was pleasure to work with.”

Ryan, his family, representatives from the YMCA, and Ryan’s job coach traveled to Albany to be a part of the honorable mention for their professional working relationship over the past 18 years.
