Afton Golf Club hosting first Hickory Classic

AFTON – Afton Golf Club owner Guy Dawson is bringing is love of golf history to the course Friday, Oct. 10 through Sunday, Oct. 12 for the First Annual Hickory Classic.

A collector of golf antiques – and someone who has traveled often to play in Ireland and Scotland – Dawson is conducting a tournament in which every player will play with authentic hickory-shafted golf clubs, and will use replica mesh-dimpled golf balls from the 1900s. “I found a company in California that rents sets of hickory clubs, and I ordered 40 sets to rent for this tournament,” Dawson said.

Players will have five irons, a wood, and a putter in their golf arsenal. Each two-person team also receives two sleeves of mesh-dimpled golf balls for play. Use of the clubs and balls is free and included in the entry fee.
