Marathon turns tables in rematch with Greene

Field Hockey

Marathon 3, Greene 2

MARATHON – Marathon was able to turn the tables on Greene and gain some redemption from an early-season loss.

The Olympians rallied with two goals over the final seven minutes to prevail over Greene. It was the Trojans’ first loss in nine contests. “We did play well, but we didn’t always execute big when we needed to,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “There were some good points, and there were some points we need to improve on.”

Coming out of a timeout with nine minutes left, Marathon kept the pressure on and tied the game at 7:06 on Tessa Knapp’s second goal of the game. Marta Malmberg had the winner with 3:55 remaining after a penalty corner.

Greene led twice in the game taking a 1-0 lead in the first half on Andrea Day’s goal, and moving in front 2-1 at 21:56 of the second half. Erin Smith took a pass from Emily Conroe and blasted the ball into the cage. “We had some very good moments, but they took it hard to us the final 10 minutes,” Carlin said.

Greene plays Whitney Point on Tuesday.

Sarah Halmer scored on a penalty stroke five minutes into the second half to give Little Falls a two-goal advantage. S-E’s Samantha Crandall sliced the lead half with a tally at 9:29.

“We played well in the midfield, but we weren’t able to get any offense going inside the 25-yard mark,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “Little Falls is a very good team, and we were right there. We just need to play 60 minutes of consistent hockey.”

Otselic Valley 1, DeRuyter 0 (OT)

SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley coach Dave Loomis was prepared to go home with a scoreless tie. A little bit of fortune changed that thinking to give the Vikes a win over DeRuyter Thursday.

“Really, the game could have gone either way,” Loomis said.

The winning goal game with 9:01 left in the first of two overtime periods. Leading scorer David Cerasani hit a shot off the inside of the upper crossbar, and it deflected down and off the Rockets keeper for the lone tally. “Neither team had many scoring opportunities, and we were lucky enough to get one in the goal,” Loomis said.

OV (5-3) visits G-MU today in a non-league matchup.

Summary

(0-0 end of regulation, OV scores in first OT)

Goals-assists: (OV) David Cerasani, 1-0.

Shots-corners: (OV) 8-4 (D) 5-4

Saves: (OV) Brad Wentworth, 3. (D) Jacob Cirbus, 6.

Oxford 4, Sidney 1

OXFORD – Oxford’s Morgan Tefft had his first two-goal game of the season, and Oxford pulled away from Sidney for its second win over the Warriors this season.

“Sidney is a much better team than the one we saw earlier this year,” said Oxford coach Jon Rogers. “We played better in the second half and were able to squeak this one out.”

Justin Schray and Jacob Carr added goals for Oxford.
