Oxford, Greene, S-E win field hockey openers

Field Hockey

Oxford 2, Walton 0

OXFORD – After a first half of play in which Oxford head coach Melissa Chrystie said her team need to adjust to the field and the heat, her team came on strong to pull out the shutout win Wednesday.

“In the second half we really picked it up,” Chrystie said. “We were close a couple of times, and we didn’t want to play for overtime because it was kind of hot.”

Following a Walton timeout, Oxford put itself on the scoreboard at the 10-minute mark when Danielle Murphy scored off a Jessica Martin pass. Five minutes later, Chantel Crandall tallied again for the Blackhawks. “I think we got a spark coming out of the timeout,” Chrystie said. “Walton is a pretty good team that finished just behind us last year, and their defense was pretty good today.”

Oxford hosts Harpursville Friday night in the first round of the Oxford Tournament.

Greene 6, Tioga 1

GREENE – Once Greene solved the Tioga defense, the scoring came in bunches.

The Trojans scored four goals in the first half over the final 20 minutes to open a 4-1 lead in Wednesday’s season-opening contest. “We had it down there (in Tioga’s end) for a while, and we finally got it in there,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin.

Christine Conroe tallied at 19:33 on a pass from Andrea Day, but the Tigers showed early grit matching that score less than two minutes later

Conroe scored off a rebound at 10 minutes, and Amy David made a move from midfield to forward, and immediately sparked her club. David tallied twice, at 4:16 and 2:41, to put the Trojans in command.

Day and Anna Crumb scored in the second half. “We still have a lot of work and we’re still jelling on defense,” Carlin said. “We missed some connections in the first half, but at the end of the half we clicked well together.”

Greene plays Marathon Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Oxford.

S-E 2, Herkimer 1 (OT)

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville senior Karli Harris became the school’s all-time leading points scorer tallying two goals – including the game-winner – Wednesday against Herkimer.

Harris scored with 2:02 left in overtime, but not before Marauders goalie Colleen Carroccio came up big in her first start. “We were dominating the overtime, but Herkimer had one breakout and Colleen shut it down,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman.

Harris scored her first goal at the 13-minute mark giving S-E the halftime lead. Herkimer forced overtime tallying with just 2:03 left in regulation. “Herkimer is much improved from last year, and we still have some kinks to work out,” Cooman said. “We spent a lot of time shuffling players, but we still came out on top.”

The Marauders host Delhi Friday.

Cincinnatus 2, Otselic Valley 1

SOUTH OTSELIC – In a rematch of last year’s Section III, Class D playoffs, the Red Lions prevailed with a goal in the final seconds of regulation.

Locked in a tie game and heading toward overtime, Cincy scored the winner with just four seconds left. “They put one in from well outside the 18-yard box, and I think it kind of took us by surprise,” said OV coach Dave Loomis.
