Smith coming off big month, heading into home stretch of season

OXFORD – Rusty Smith is coming off his best month of the 2008 racing season, and is on pace to shatter last year’s career-best six-win campaign.

Smith recently stretched his winning streak to four straight feature victories at Mountain Speedway, the last of which was his most dominating performance of the year. “Two weeks ago, we took the lead after five laps and just annihilated the field,” Smith said. “We had almost a half-track lead before the yellow flag came out, which is a pretty good feeling. We’ve been on a pretty good roll.”

Smith has enjoyed success and strong finishes everywhere this season, but at Mountain Speedway in St. John’s, Pennsylvania, he has raised the bar. All six of this year’s wins have come at Mountain Speedway to go along with six second-place finishes. “I think what has happened is guys are working to go faster, and some have dialed themselves out and made themselves slower,” Smith said. “The other drivers are trying harder and we’ve been fortunate to avoid the accidents. Because we have such a great car, we’ve taken it a little easier at the start until the field thinned out. We’re able to pick and choose and not get ourselves in a bad situation.”
