Accident victim recovering from spinal injuries

NORWICH – A Norwich man who was airlifted with extensive injuries to his spine following a car accident has been stabilized and moved into a special care unit at Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City.

Michael J. Abbott, 20, 32 Hayes St., Norwich, was taken by Guthrie to Wilson after he lost control of his 2003 Kia while driving over wet pavement in New Berlin Wednesday morning.

His father, Norwich basketball coach Mark Abbott, telephoned from Johnson City early Monday morning to report that his son, “was doing OK.”

“The cards, prayers, visits and phone calls have all helped tremendously with Mike’s outlook,” said his father.

Michael has been unable to move his left leg since the accident, but his father reported that feeling had returned. Michael had undergone surgery Saturday, fusing the C6 and C7 vertebrae in his neck. The operation was said by doctors to have been successful, and he is now being moved into the hospital’s neurological suite to receive special care, said Mark.
