Dime to golfball-sized hail does damage in northern Chenango County

CHENANGO COUNTY – Random blasts of hail ranging in size did most of its damage in northern Chenango County as storms passed through the area Monday afternoon, emergency officials say.

Lightning also struck two homes in Sherburne and New Berlin.

“The majority of damage was from the hail,” said county Emergency Coordinator Matt Beckwith. “We heard reports that it was anywhere from dime to golfball-sized.”

Beckwith said there were reports of slick roads, damaged vehicles and downed tree limbs as a result of the falling ice balls stretching from the Town of Plymouth to the Town of New Berlin. Hail and heavy lightning also caused some damage in the Afton-Bainbridge area, he said. No injuries were reported.
