Relay for Life events kick off this week

CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Relay for Life season will unofficially begin on Thursday as the first of the event-wide activities is set to take place.

On Thursday, the Relay for Life Committee is hoping the community will show its support for the Relay by participating in a “Paint the Town Purple” event. Purple is the national Relay for Life color and is said to be the color of inspiration. For that reason, Committee Members Marie DeSarro and Kim Mack explained, on Thursday the committee is hoping local residents, community members and businesses will take part in the event by wearing purple clothing, hanging purple banners, displaying purple ribbons, decorating windows and store fronts with purple displays and embracing the spirit of Relay for Life.

DeSarro explained that Norwich is the ideal setting for the event, since the school colors are purple and white, and many purple pride products are already available.

“We hope the whole town shows support for the Chenango County Relay which will be held on July 18 and 19,” Mack said.

Following the unofficial kick off event, the Chenango Relay Committee will hold its first event-wide fundraiser. On Saturday, the committee will work with Plaza Lanes for an “Open Bowling Day” fundraiser. Bowling will start at 11 a.m. and continue until the alley closes. The bowling alley has agreed to donate $1 for each game and $1 for each shoe rental that day to the Relay for Life. In addition, they will contribute 15 percent of all snack bar sales to the event.
