NORWICH – Since 2002, the City of Norwich has been involved in litigation concerning its interest in Chenango Lake, but according to lawyers from Hancock and Estabrook, all of that may be coming to an end.
The litigation, originally filed between two Chenango Lake property owners, eventually drew in every lake property owner, including the City of Norwich, which uses the lake for its primary water supply. The properties, which were intended to be used for seasonal (summer) use only, were being converted by some individuals to year-round residences, and the city was worried about the effect the numerous septic systems would have on the water.
Last week, lawyers from Hancock and Estabrook attended a meeting of the Common Council to update the council on the status of the litigation.
Attorney Ashley Hayes explained that the framework for the settlement had been established; however the property owners who had represented themselves in court would have 30 days to review the settlement and decide whether they wanted to accept the terms of the settlement or to continue to trial.
