OXFORD – B-G/Afton captured its third straight Midstate Athletic Conference title Saturday at Oxford outdistancing runner-up Greene by 16 points.

Kris Stafford won his third straight league title, one of three Bears titlists. Stafford was solid in a 10-5 decision over Deposit-Hancock’s Derek Wignall at 160 pounds, and it followed title wins by Kyle Davy at 130 points and Wayne Cirigliano’s at 103 pounds.

The Bears piled up the points placing seven wrestlers in the finals. “I didn’t feel we were as sharp as we needed to be, and we had to grind a little more,” said Bears coach Brandon MacNaught. “I am taking a positive out of a negative. Yes, we didn’t perform to our capabilities, but we still won.”

Greene’s title wins came from Kurt Shear at 145 pounds and Tyler Beckwith’s at 171, and the clear difference as B-GA’s strength in the lower weights. Six of B-GA’s finalists came in the first six weight classes.
