Fire destroys city residence

NORWICH – Fire destroyed a Norwich home along Steer Lane Thursday afternoon.

The house of Daryl and Bobbi Jo Woodbeck went up in flames at around noon on Thursday. No one was injured.

“The smoke could be seen from the station by the time crews pulled out,” said Norwich Fire Chief Joseph Angelino.

Firefighters had to break several windows and cut holes in the roof to stop the blaze that had spread into the attic. The fire also reached the basement and several other parts of the house.

NYSEG was also on the scene and said a local power cut might be necessary and were waiting until fires crews had secured the area to get a look at the damage.

The Chenango County Fire Coordinator was also on the scene and the cause of the fire had not been speculated because crews were still mopping up the remnants of the blaze.

The Red Cross had been contacted and is currently working with the victims to see if they require aid in finding a place to stay.
