Greene 3, Whitney Point 1

GREENE – Greene thrust itself into the division one title chase in Section IV field hockey avenging its only division loss of the season Thursday afternoon.

“We came right out of the gates and went for it,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin of her team’s fast start.

Andrea Day had two goals – the first she lifted a ball over sprawled out Whitney Point keeper Alicia Widdall. She added a second goal getting a crossing pass from Holly Davis making it a two-goal lead just 10 1/2 minutes into play.

Greene was so dominant, it allowed just one Point shot on goal in the first half, and Carlin struggled to remember that effort. “We were just beating them to the ball today and everyone was super aggressive,” she said. “We knew that in order to be league champions, we had to win this game today.”

Erin Smith had the last goal after Widdall broke up a Davis breakaway effort with a sliding tackle. The ball squirted loose and Smith tucked away an empty-netter. “We couldn’t have played much better today – especially the first half,” Carlin said.

Greene (6-1, 8-2) plays Monday at Cortland.
