Supervisors: Don't tear down old Vets' Home

OXFORD – The Chenango County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution this month urging the New York State Department of Health to find a use for the existing New York State Veterans’ Home building located on county Route 32 in the Town of Oxford.

A 50 percent larger residential home has been taking shape this spring on the hillside adjacent to the 1970s era structure. A previous facility, built in 1897, was demolished to make way for the current complex.

Supervisor Lawrence N. Wilcox moved for the resolution’s adoption based on rumors about the building’s future. “I really don’t know what’s going to happen to it. I’ve heard rumors about tearing it down and continued use of it, but nothing definite. My concern was that we make sure that we had our voice heard by the state legislators and the department of health to encourage them use it as some sort of a facility that it would need.”
