FD warns of brush fire dangers

NORWICH – This time of year raises new concerns for the Norwich Fire Department as summer time hazards begin to appear.

Fire Dept. officials recommend people take extra care while driving and having controlled burns.

“This time of year you’ll start to see brush fires and with everyone out and about the amount of MVA’s (motor vehicle accidents) is usually one of the highest,” said Norwich Fire Captain Mike Ford.

Ford said the main reason brush fired begin are usually because someone having a controlled burn made an error. “One thing you’ve got to think about is if you have a extinguishing source, a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher. Probably the most common mistake is when people leave a controlled fire unattended, they go inside and forget about it, but when the come back it’s out of hand,” said Ford.
