Morrone to be honored at Boy Scout dinner Thursday

NORWICH – The Baden-Powell Council of the Boy Scouts of America will honor lifetime Norwich resident Tom Morrone on Thursday. Morrone will be given the Distinguished Citizen of the Year award for a lifetime spent in service to his community.

The Distinguished Citizen of the Year award has been given out yearly since 1986. “When it was originally conceived, the point was to recognize members of the community who had done outstanding work for the greater Norwich area and across Chenango County,” said Chris Wilkinson, the district executive for the Baden-Powell Council.

According to Wilkinson, there is no set criteria for choosing award recipients. A committee, made up of past recipients and community members, nominates several individuals, and the committee then votes on which nominee is most worthy.

“I’m honored that the Baden-Powell Council chose me, both as a Norwich and a Chenango County native,” Morrone said.

Morrone, of Christman Motors, says it is important to give back to the community. “When you’re born and brought up in an area, you try to do for it what is best,” said Morrone. Over the years, he has served as a member of the traffic commission the Local Development Corporation, the Town of Norwich Planning Board and many other organizations. He has served as the president of the Chenango County Cancer Society and as the chairman of the Chenango County Republican Committee. As of Sept. 15 of this year, Morrone will be the longest serving county chairman on either side of the aisle, with more than 26 years under his belt.
