GREENE - “Keep Greene Clean Day” an annual event sponsored by the Greater Greene Chamber of Commerce will take place on May 5. This is an early reminder to save an hour or two in the morning that day. If enough people show up, our village will be clean in a few hours. Come to the Sherwood Inn any time from 8 a.m. until noon and get your street assignment.
All Greene scouts, teams, clubs, organizations, groups and individuals are urged to come and sign up. Each volunteer will receive a street assignment, plastic gloves and a plastic grocery bag.
The following is part of a writeup from a newspaper in South Carolina that could just as easily be from Greene:
“Have you ever looked down at the curb when you are stopped at a traffic light? I have, only to notice hundreds of cigarette butts piled up along the side of the road. This is a major littering and a serious environmental problem. It’s quite ironic that smokers don’t want to put their butts in their car’s ashtray because it will make their car smell bad, Well...Duh! Instead of using the ashtray, smoker’s throw their butts out the window whether they are on the interstate, a neighborhood road or in a parking lot. That little, still-lit butt comes flying out the one and a half inch cracked down window. This is just wrong. First, not only is it the No. 1 form of litter in America, it is the No. 1 problem in the world. It is estimated that several trillion cigarette butts are discarded upon Mother Earth each year and it takes more than 20 years for one cigarette butt to degrade. Most think cigarette filters are made from cotton. On the contrary, they are made from cellulose acetate, a form of plastic.
