Town looks to condemn eyesore

NORWICH – After more than a decade of debate about what to do, Town of Norwich officials say they are taking the necessary steps to correct what they call “an eyesore” along state Rte. 12 South.

During a regularly scheduled meeting Monday, the Norwich Town Board discussed what could be done about a residence – known as the Halfway House – that has fallen into disrepair. The residence, and other structures surrounding it, are located near the border with the Town of Oxford.

The property is not safe to live in, according to Supervisor David C. Law, R-Town of Norwich. “It is deplorable,” he said. “I have been there several times to ask for something to be done, and it has not been done. The roof is falling apart, the back steps are crumbling, windows are out, doors are out. It’s simply not safe.”

The last time this property looked decent was when the Halfway House was a restaurant. You look at that mess on route 12 and assume( and you know what that means) all the houses out in back are in the same shape. Let's take bets on how long before they can do anything about it. And I mean years not weeks or months!!

I agree it is an eyesore and it could look some better is the tenants would just keep it looking cleaned up inside and out. It is not the landlords fault that it looks bad on the outside, but they should be willing to fix things up if the tenants are willing to clean up. A little soap and water doesn't hurt anyone. We have slummy looking homes right here in Norwich town, filthy dirty looking places. It really takes people taking pride in their dwellings and cleaning things up

How about the eyesore right next to the county office bldg? County employees have to park next to it and walk by it on their way to work. I understand that money is tight for some, but simple trash removal laws should be enforced better.

this property has looked better and much worse in the past, much worse can be seen elsewhere in the county maybe some group can help fix it and others like it up if the landlord/owners cant afford to.

being displaced from my mom's condo after she got sick and is now in assisted living with the place being sold; right now I am seeking something either reasonably affordable; which up here there seem to be many, unlike here in connecticut where they'd charge you $850 for dumpy apts like this. BUT , and this is funny, many landlords I have called in chenango county seem to NOT want to rent to " section 8" at all, much the same as anywhere. AFTER SEEING THIS PLACE, NOW I KNOW WHY! HUD enforces building safety codes! SLUMLORDS LIKE THIS WANT TO SIMPLY COLLECT THE RENT EVERY MONTH AND DO NOT WANT TO BE TOLD TO " FIX YOUR PLACE UP" one of the local landlords I spoke with over the phone seemed to give me every reason he did not like" all those welfare recipients in this county." he described his rental as an " older trailer" and gave me the whole heartache story about " all the bad tenants" and went on to say " he hated complainers that expect things to be fixed" no wonder my girlfriend from vancouver BC canada tells me " in CANADA THEY WOULD NEVER GET AWAY WITH WHAT THEY DO IN THE STATES." LOL

This is exactly why we need to have laws against landowners / slumlords like this. They are there to collect the rent each month, heck they are on the phone with the tenants if the rent is more then a few days late. But when it comes to what is decent, what is right, and what is safe for the tenants, well they either can not be found, or they cry about having no money. Lets put this in perspective to any person who is a landlord/owner or looking to buy these homes and rent them out. When you do so, you are in business.. We do not care about your money problems. That simply put your problem, not the tenants problem, nor is it the communities problem. If you can not afford it, sell the property to someone who can afford to make the repairs. The only thing these landlords/owners are good for is lowering the quality of life for the tenants and the community. But lets not forget what it does to the surrounding property values!

Although it would be great to see an eyesore cleaned up, I don't see the difference between this property and the dozens of others like it that are scattered across the county.
