A Chenango County record 10 wrestlers will take to the mat today between 10 and 10:30 a.m. at the Times Union Center in Albany for the New York State Public High School Wrestling Championships.

B-G/Afton takes four to the event to lead all area teams including champions Danny Gormley (96), Justin Davy (130), Kris Stafford (160), and at-large wild-card selection, Ben Mumbulo (189).

The NYSPHSAA instituted the wild-card format this season to fill out weight classes and require wrestlers to win more matches in order to place in the tournament. Previously, a wrestler with a first-round bye to the quarterfinals needed just an opening-match win to guarantee a place finish.

“It’s the state tournament and the best of the best,” said UV first-year coach Jim DuVall. “Every kid should wrestle matches to place.”
