S-E extends unbeaten record

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville played its blanketing defense and looked every bit the number one seed in extending its unbeaten record to 21-0 in the first round of the Section III Class B-1 playoffs Tuesday.

The Marauders scored the game’s first eight points, and didn’t allow a point the first 4 1/2 minutes of the game. With leading scorer Wilson Rose on the bench in foul trouble nearly the entire second quarter, the Marauders were able to add to an eight-point first-quarter lead.

Garrett Porack scored six points off the bench, Drew Doscher hit a three, while role reserve Caleb Johnson scored on a layup, Jon Pinney converted a layup off a nifty long-range bounce pass from Gabe Fowler, and senior Tom Niles capped the quarter laying in the deuce after Pinney drive-and-dish.

“This was a good win for us because Wilson was out of the game more than he was in it,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “Jon played well, Drew stepped up, and Garrett had a big night. We had three guys in double figures, and Wilson wasn’t one of them. That’s just good offense.”

Pinney led with 18 points and nine assists, Porack scored a career-high 16, and Doscher had 10. Niles led with seven rebounds as S-E moves on to play either Westhill or Marcellus Friday or Saturday at Manley Field House in Syracuse.
