MAC Championships

GREENE – Greene was a runaway winner at the Midstate Athletic Conference team championships easily outdistancing Cooperstown by 133.5 points Friday night.

Chris Osterwald came away with four overall firsts including a school-record 411.20 in diving that was good enough to meet the state-qualifying cutoff score. Peter McCauley and David Yeager added three total firsts, and Patrick Kelsey broke the school record in the 200 individual medley (2.20.74). “I’m incredibly pleased with the way the athletes performed,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “We set a number of personal-best swims, even though we haven’t started our taper.”

Adrian Enscoe had a first-place finish for burgeoning Sherburne-Earlville taking the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.67.

Overall, Greene took eight of 13 events.

Team scores: Greene 438, Cooperstown, 304.5, A/BG, 181.5; S-E, 177

Johnson City 94, Norwich 92

JOHNSON CITY – In a tightly contested matchup, Friday, Johnson City narrowly edged the Tornado Friday despite the visiting Purple winning seven of 13 events.

“A two-point meet in swimming is the same as a two-point basketball game,” said Norwich coach Rick Marchant. “One made or missed basket is the difference, and for us, any event that we place one notch higher is the difference. It’s only destructive to dwell on that. We swam a good meet against a good team, and we performed well as a team.”
