County moves ahead with jail plans

NORWICH – As planned, members of the Agriculture, Buildings and Grounds Committee got down to work Tuesday to determine the size and scope of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and Jail building renovation project.

The two buildings on West Park Place will be separated and the old jail cell structure demolished to the tune of approximately $2 million. Representatives of South New Berlin-based John Snyder Architects were reluctant to reveal the fee for the first of three phases in the project. “We need a clear scope first, and we are flexible on that,” Snyder said.

The committee made a motion to accept all three phases of the project in concept and directed the architectural firm to present the schematics and anticipated construction budget for the first phase to members of the Finance Committee Feb. 1.

What ever happened to the old jail being used as an alternative to juvinal detention for first time offenders? I really liked the idea of having a way for our judges to throw a first time offender in their even if only for the weekend just to give them a scare, and hopefully cause them to staighten out. But now the county is spending 2 million just on phase 1.. For what? office space? There is enough space available in the eaton center, or right along broad street.. Leave it be and give judges an alternative to throwing kids in juvinal detention. What do you have to loose? A good kid getting worse, or a bad kid getting worse? 2 million on phase 1 alone. I can only imagine what phase 2 & 3 will cost.. For that kind of a price it would be cheaper to level the building and start over from scratch..
