Local farmers recognized for conservation efforts

NORWICH – The Chenango County Soil and Water Conservation District honored two local farmers during a luncheon at the Canasawacta Country Club recently. Arthur V. and Joan Manz were presented with the Forestry Achievement Award. The Van Hassel farm, operated by Herman L., and his son, Herman A. Von Hassel, were awarded the Conservation Farmer of the Year Award. For 66 years Chenango County has presented an annual award to a person or party who has contributed greatly to the local environment.

“It’s in my heart to do it anyway even without an award,” said Herman L.

Located in the Town of Otselic, the Von Hassel farm is 700 acres plus, comprised of open fields, woodlands and the Otselic River. The land host an enormous quantity of wildlife as well as a large natural food supply and safe breeding grounds. The Von Hassels have been moving away from using any commercial fertilizers or feed additives and they hope to be completely organic by 2007. “If you take care of the land the land will take care of you,” said Herman L. This is the second time the farm has been awarded the Conservation Farmer of the year. In 1982 Herman L. and his late wife Claire Von Hassel received the award for installing many conservation practices at the time.
