Bainbridge power plant may get a new lease on life

BAINBRIDGE – A former power plant in the Town of Bainbridge is on a short list of sites in New York that could be picked by a private developer for a $1.5 billion, 500 megawatt power generating facility.

Jennison Station, purchased by AES-NY, Inc. of Johnson City in the 1990s, produced electricity for decades before being closed in 2000 due to its antiquated technologies. A handful of state agencies, including the Governor’s Office of Regulatory Reform and the New York Power Authority, have identified it as one of five locations for an advanced “clean coal” power generating plant. A decision could be reached by December.

County leaders put their weight behind the effort during a meeting of the Board of Supervisors Tuesday. “The productive re-use of the property is in the best interest of the Chenango County community,” a resolution stated.
