City PD to sell impound cars on eBay

NORWICH – The Norwich City Police Department has begun its sale of vehicles and other miscellaneous items on eBay.

Ebay, the on-line website used by millions, is designed to sell items in an auction type fashion. The items for sale by the local police department include impounded vehicles, unclaimed bicycles and a limited amount of surplus office equipment. All items have been declared surplus to the needs of the city government by the Common Council. All proceeds from the auction will go back into the city’s general fund.

“The police department has been using eBay for approximately six years to sell surplus patrol cars. With our impound yard filling up, we decided to sell off some of those vehicles also,” said Deputy Chief Dale Smith.

Each vehicle will be available for viewing and bidding on eBay for seven days. The vehicle will be auctioned to the highest bidder in “as is” condition with no warranty, written or implied. Anyone wishing to view the vehicles can search eBay by the station’s seller name, “norwichsurplus.” People can submit questions about the vehicle by clicking the “ask the seller” link option or by e-mailing the department at surplus@norwichpd.org.
