Cuts to USPS

Things to now ponder.
Who's in favor of cutting delivery?
How many are going to be losing their job?
Longer days or no overtime will hurt the employees.
Will the USPS follow though cutting all the mom and pop post office in all the villages replacing them with regional offices as planed?
How far will I have to travel to find a office?

Consider now the word service is being removed from The United states postal Service.

I expect to see all the postal unions upper echelon fighting these cuts to protect their incomes from union members.

Actually, Saturday delivery is a waste of money and time. It just means less junk mail to sort and recycle. My son is a postman in Tacoma, WA and I will be talking to him to see how this will effect him. From what he said before, shouldn't make any difference. Just different days off.
If life is a waste of time and time is a waste of life, then let's all get wasted together and have the time of our lives.

I'm curious to speak with my uncle and cousin about this, as they both deliver for the Norwich Post Office. With technology the way it is now, I wonder if the entire system will be overhauled at some point in the future.

USPS is a prime example of the government trying to run a business. They can't do it. Yet they still think they can overhaul the health care system? Pass the bong please.

It would make more sense to me if they closed on Mondays. That's when most of the holidays are anyway and for a lot of people saturday is the only day they can get to the post office.

I talked to the folks yesterday at the Norwich office and they said that only deliveries will be canceled on Saturdays but the office itself will remain open.

Last time they talked about it, postal officials talked about cutting just Wednesdays delivery. Wednesday has always been the slowest day of delivery. Fridays, Saturdays & Mondays are the busiest days.

According to officials, the Post office it self would remain open 6 days a week. Just delivery days would change. This would really just impact PTF carriers and Tech carriers (route jumpers) The regular carrier already delivers his/her route 5 days a week..

Never even mailed a letter until I was 25.

Bills, taxes, school transcripts, personal communications are all done electronically. It's faster, free and convenient. Deliveries for items purchase online, advertising leaflets and bills are about all the interaction I've ever had with the post office. A lot of those letters from utilities, government agencies and colleges often urge customers to use electronic methods for return service in lieu of mail.

Seems like the Post Office is in the paper and print based income boat that's sinking in the rising sea of media technology.

Couldn't agree more with you. If the advertising industries closed tomorrow many will be out of jobs. The internet included. god I just love all them pop ups.

Still the post office gives me the best service for my dollar. They also deliver to places UPS, FedX and a few others won’t go.

The postal service runs on Bulk Business Mail and not first class. That’s why your big mailers pay a lot less than the average person.

Take the Sunday papers for example. People that don’t have a subscription to them usually get them bulk delivered in their Friday or Saturday mail. Business wants those circulars deliver on a certain date. Look at all the circulars that Kenyon press puts out. How many jobs up their would be lost.

I only really need the Post Office for mailing packages. I print my stamps on my computer now. I pay most of my bills online. A small PO kiosk in our local grocery store would serve just as well. I only check my mailbox once or twice a week, as most of it is junk mail.

It may be faster and convenient, but it is certainly not free, unless, of course, you still live at your parent's home and they foot the broadband internet bill. And it is also less convenient, albiet impossible, to have electronic personal communication with someone that is not connected to the internet.

I wonder when tyler or one of his buddies will come up with a way to deliver non-electronic items electronically. His list of items that the internet can do better than the USPS is sadly lacking

Some things are required to pass through the US mail. You can't prove someone got your e-mail so, many legal notices that require a signature or other proof of delivery have to. I know if anyone claims an income tax rebate for the purchase of a home has to file through the mail instead of electronically. However, I can see why the volume has decreased. I'm just old fashioned I guess. I would rather mail my payments than pay the bank a monthly fee for the privilege of paying bills on line. I distrust the Internet still because if you can take money out of your accounts, so can someone else.

Don't you use a debit card at all? My bank doesn't charge me a thing to pay bills online. When I pay by check, my account number is on it, along with my address and phone number. There are plenty of ways someone could forge a check and take money out. They don't have to do it electronically.

If they cut Saturday delivery, they would have a little more work during the week, but not much. If they were to rent space in a store, they could save on their building maintenance.

They don't charge you yet.

So, if I write a check to Chase Card Services and mail it to them, how many ways could it be forged?

Pat, don't you use your credit cards online? Or when using debt cards don't you have to punch in your PIN when getting gas or other items? I see many ways someone could rip you off using plastic too.

I’ll take my chances mailing my bills. At least if they attack my Checking account they won’t get much. Credit and debt cards they could get quite a bit more.
